question

Category: Misc — warren @ 12:51 pm

Hi

I have been wondering if there is a device out there that works as a mobile pdf reader. What I had in mind was something about the size of your average paperback, that plugged into your computer via usb and stored pdf documents so you could read them where ever.

Nothing too fancy, don’t need internet connections or anything like that… pretty much like an ipod, but for pdf’s, but with a big enough viewing area so you can read them clearly.

Please let me know if you know of something like that.

Cheers

Soapboxing

Category: Misc, Philosophy — warren @ 4:21 pm

SOAPBOXING:
a philosophical question game, inspired by the manner of great philosophers, ancient and modern

The rules are simple:
1. Everyone writes down a question.
2. Someone volunteers to answer one of those questions, chosen randomly or not.
3. As the Player, they have 3-4 minutes to answer it. Examples of this include:
- thinking out loud;
- looking up the answer;
- waxing lyrically about a mistake someone else made in answering a similar question;
- opening the floor to discussion;
- cross-examining an audience member, Socratic-style;
- giving a performative dance…
4. No one else may speak unless asked to by the Player.
5. The round may end whenever the Player wishes, when time runs out, or when the designated Judge gongs them.

Summer Days

Category: Misc, Philosophy — warren @ 5:09 pm

Hi all

Not quite summer, but I am participating in two, count them 2, summer sporting competitions. Neither of which are traditional summer sports!

On Monday nights I am trying my hand at Rec Footy - a modified version of AFL. No tackling, no rough stuff, all very civilised. There is more about it here - I am in the team named Hanksy’s Heroes.

On Tuesday nights I am testing my body out by playing men’s summer hockey at Footscray Hockey Centre for RMIT, as a ‘keeper, don’t think I could play hockey on the field anymore! Did alright in my first game, 3-0 win, I only had to make a couple of saves, but did have to “pressure” a couple of forwards who made it into the circle unmarked (it is hard without a full team to cover everyone all the time). Most importantly, I felt no back pain at any stage during the game or more importantly after the game, in fact, it felt as if I never had a problem with my back. I am so happy!

As for the rest of summer, well lets wait and see.

Hopefully I will be able to take some time off work at the end of Jan/early Feb to attend the MSCP summer program. I am hoping to attend the two History of Philosophy streams and the Nietzsche one. All the details are here. In case you were wondering MSCP stands for Melbourne School of Continental Philosophy.

Ok catch ya!
